Why should I scrap my vehicle?

There are many reasons for which you can scarp your vehicle; here are few crucial conditions that need your vehicle to be scrapped.

  • If the vehicle has reached its time, it is unsafe to drive it on the UK roads. So don't risk your lives.

  • If you feel the vehicle's running cost is too high to maintain, you can scrap the car without consideration and go for a new one.

  • If the vehicle has been written off under category A or B, then you have no other go. You should scrap the vehicle and do not have access to drive them legally on the UK roads.

  • If the vehicle is an old model, it is hard to find spare parts. Sometimes you cannot repair them. To avoid such a mess, you can scratch the vehicle and get a good benefit.

How can I start the process of scrapping?

Once you have decided to scrap the vehicle, find a reputed scrapyard or the ATF (Authorized Transport Facility). Before taking the vehicle to the scrapyard, you can remove any parts that you wanted to keep for later use.

Choose a good scrapyard with a decent quote nearby. You can also look through the government website for an approved treatment facility. Once your vehicle has been collected, make sure you pass your vehicle logbook for more information with the yellow slip with you.

Apart from all these, it is important to inform the DVLA about the scrapping process, and the vehicle has been scrapped. Else you have to pay a penalty of £1000.

How to inform the DVLA?

It is a simple process to inform the DVLA about your scrapped vehicle. In the yellow slip of the V5C document, you will find an 11 digit reference number. Tell the scrapyard to fill in the details in this part of the logbook (the yellow part). It is to confirm whether you are transferring or selling the vehicle to any motor trade or dismantler. This can be sent to the DVLA via post.

Can I inform them online? Yes, you can do this through their web tool. Make sure while entering the details of the vehicle; enter the scrapped information in the section which asks for whom you have sold the vehicle. It is mandatory to do even you have not received any money for the vehicle.

This helps people to be educated about the scrapped vehicle through the DVLA scrapped car check.

Is the logbook necessary to scrap a vehicle?

If you do not have the logbook, still you can scrap your vehicle, but it needs certain steps to be followed as compensation. You have to write the DVLA about the loss of the logbook along with the vehicle reg number, make and model. It is also essential to inform when and where the vehicle has been scrapped exactly with proof (Certificate of Destruction).

Is it possible to keep the scrapped vehicle with me?

Many car owners have an infinite bond towards their car that won't let them scrap or leave it to anyone. Hence, some owners like to keep the vehicle with them even if they don't use it. If your vehicle falls under the write-off category S or N, then there is no restriction to keep it with you. You can even take them to the road if repaired properly with experts and informed with the DVLA and re-registered.

How to check if a car is scrapped?

It is important to factor in while buying a used vehicle. You can take a car data check which tells you the complete history of the vehicle. To know the scrapped data of the vehicle, you can run the basic check from car analytics that tells you if the car is genuine or scrapped one that helps you escape from buying a lemon.
